NIGERIA UNION OF TEACHERS' LOGO
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has scheduled to have a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday to deliberate its next line of action over the lingering strike by university teachers.
The NUT President, Mr. Michael Alogba-Olukoya disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos.
It would be recalled that the union had on September 26 given the Federal Government and lecturers a two-week ultimatum, to resolve their differences and end the strike or face nationwide strike by NUT members.
The lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on the nationwide strike on the 1st of July and have maintained the action is comprehensive, total and indefinite.
The NUT President disclosed that the union had extended the ultimatum following appeals from well-meaning Nigerians, noting that the extension will end on Tuesday, October 22 (today).
However it would also be recalled that the university lecturers have been protesting the non-implementation of an agreement they signed with the Federal government in 2009 on improved funding of universities and payment of allowances to ASUU members, among other issues.
