The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike at three universities owned by the Lagos State Government over unresolved demands by the union.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The union declared the strike on Tuesday after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government on August 31 without an agreement being reached.
ASUU had earlier issued a final warning on September 10 and set another deadline for September 13, but said the government failed to engage the union on the outstanding issues.
The union is demanding the implementation of provisions contained in its December 2025 agreement with the Federal Government, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other welfare benefits for serving and retired academic staff.
ASUU said it did not take the decision lightly, noting that the strike could disrupt academic activities and affect students, parents and other members of the university community.
It appealed to students to remain calm and peaceful while efforts to resolve the dispute continue.
The union also assured the public that the action was not directed at the affected universities or their managements, commending the institutions for their efforts to implement the agreement.
ASUU called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations and other stakeholders to intervene and help facilitate a resolution of the dispute.
According to the union, it had made several attempts to resolve the issues through dialogue but accused the Lagos State Government of failing to address the outstanding demands, despite similar agreements being implemented in neighbouring states.
The strike has received the endorsement of ASUU's national leadership.
The union said the action would continue until the Lagos State Government engages with it, accepts the December 2025 agreement and implements the relevant provisions.
