Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Monday, charged members of the National Assembly not to see themselves as being above the law of the country.

The speaker stated this in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at a two-day workshop organized by the Joint Committee on Rules and Business of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Legislative Practice and Procedure.

He stressed that the lawmakers must subject themselves to the rule of law while carrying out their legislative functions, stressing that while the law protects lawmakers over comments made on the floor of the House, such immunity did not cover any illegality committed by a legislator.

Tambuwal further charged the lawmakers on the need to enforce accountability on public office holders in the country through effective oversight and investigative hearings, noting that doing so would facilitate rapid development of the nation’s democracy.
