News reaching the sports desk of CEOAFRICA.com says the football authorities of Cape Verde has launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over their disqualification by FIFA from participating in the 2014 World Cup Play-off in Africa.

It would be recalled that Cape Verde beats Tunisia 2-0 away to finish top of Group B of the African qualifying round, only for them to forfeit their play-off ticket to the Cartage Eagles after FIFA ruled that defender Fernando Varela had been ineligible to play the game. He was banned for four matches after being sent off in a Group B clash with Equatorial Guinea, which was lost by Cape Verde 4-3.

However, the result against the Guineans was overturned and the game awarded to Cape Verde because Equatorial Guinea fielded an ineligible player, Emilio Nsue, who eventually got a hat-trick in the encounter.

Cape Verde’s position is that since that particular match with Equitorial Guinea has been adjudged null and void, the red card and subsequent ban should not have counted.
