The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday warned the Federal

Government against forcefully reopening of universities, saying that such threat will not end the present strike embarked upon by the union.

The union cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan to tow the path of honour by

implementing the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement, saying that the media reported forceful re-opening of universities will be the highest form of authoritarianism which will deepen the present crisis in the education sector.

The Secretary of the union, University of Ibadan branch, Dr Ayodeji Omole in a statement entitled "FG's reported plan to forcefully re-open Varsity", said such a report was capable of portraying the government as anti-democratic.

He said while the union welcomes the invitation of ASUU for a meeting on Monday(tomorrow),it will be unacceptable to "our members if government fails to come out with a clear agenda for implementing the 2009 Agreement.

"The attention of our Union is drawn to new report in some media alleging that the President of Nigeria will direct the re-opening of all Nigerian Universities with or without ASUU."We wish to state that while the President of the Federation has issued an invitation to the leaders of our Union for dialogue, it will be unacceptable to our members if government fails to come out with a clear agenda for implementing the 2009 Agreement. Authoritarian posturing has never solved and will not solve the impasse. We are calling on Mr President to tow the path of honour and respect the 2009 Agreement," he said.

The union insisted that"any proposal not based on a clear acceptance of a framework for implementing the 2009 Agreement will, instead, seek to impose a solution regarding the impasse, and will not be a solution to the present crisis."It urged President Goodluck Jonathan to set good example and be guided by the principles of honouring agreements, justice and industrial harmony, saying "it is laughable that a government that publicised releasing 100billion naira has not even released a kobo."
