NIGERIA- Properties worth millions of naira were lost yesterday when a timber market in Jos, Plateau State Nigeria, was destroyed by fire around 9 p.m.

The grain section of the market popularly refers to as “Katako Market” was consumed entirely by the fire as rescuers and fire fighters battled to put it out.

According to what CEOAFRICA.com gathered, the Director Fire Service in Plateau State, Michael Dung, revealed to sources that his men have been deployed to the scene for effective discharge of duties.

“When we got the news of the outbreak of fire at the market, our men immediately mobilized to the scene of the fire with six fire trucks and it took us about eight hours to put out the fire,” he said.

No death was recorded from the incident. However, some persons who tried to put out the fire before the arrival of fire service were badly injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Although the cause of the fire is yet unknown, sources revealed that owners of shops at the market have attributed the cause to a high voltage from an electrical device.

The inferno also affected other items like building materials, grains, household items and fairly used clothes shop.
