The trial of the sons of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State for money laundering is to continue despite the decision of the governor not to defect from the ruling People’s Democratic Party to the opposition All Progressives Party.

A senior official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in a statement yesterday said that the arrest and investigation of the governor’s children over funds amounting to N10 billion had no political undertone.

The operative said the agency did not want to be seen as playing politics with a serious issue of money laundering, for which the suspects had already made some statements that would lead to prosecution at the appropriate time.

The source who confirmed the release of the governor’s sons on bail, pointed out that they would be made to return for questioning in connection with the matter, which was already in the public domain.

He added that the arrest and detention of the two sons of the governor also opened the door for the detention of some bank workers accused of aiding and abetting the alleged crime.

But Governor Sule Lamido had imputed political intimidation and unwarranted attempt to frame his sons in a bid to cow him because of his political leaning.

Although he refused to join the APC on Tuesday, Lamido pointed out that he would not be stampeded by any person to act against his belief and conviction.
