At least 1,000 protesters in Thailand have forced their way into the army headquarters compound, breaking open the gate in continuation of the anti-government rallies which has lasted for over sixth days.

More protesters gathered outside ruling party headquarters, as part of efforts to force the government to step down.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urged demonstrators to end the street protests, after surviving a no-confidence vote in parliament but protest leader,                      Suthep Thaugsuban has rejected her appeal.

"We will not let them work anymore," the former senior opposition lawmaker was quoted to have said in a speech late on Thursday.

Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the protesters were in the courtyard but not inside the buildings.

"We will make them understand that this is a security area and we will ask them to leave,'' he was quoted a source as saying.

A source at the scene, said protesters was massed on a lawn outside the building listening to speeches from leaders on a stage they had erected.

They were however said to have urged the army to come out in support of the demonstrators, and noting that they want to know which side   the army stands on.
