After much persuasion by African leaders and bodies interference in the Gambia’s political crisis, which proved futile and made the Gambians fate unknown, with electoral future uncertain, Yahya Jammeh of Gambia has finally agreed to step down from power.

Ceoafrica gathered that the agreement was announced on state television, where he said it was "not necessary that a single drop of blood be shed".

Although, details of deal struck wasn’t disclosed, it was further gathered that the agreement followed hours of talks between Yahya Jammeh and West African mediators.

Yahya Jammeh has led the country for 22 years but was defeated in December's election by Adama Barrow, who has been in neighbouring Senegal for days and was inaugurated as president in the Gambian embassy there on Thursday.

African troops from several West African nations, including Senegal, were deployed in The Gambia, threatening to drive Jammeh out of office if he did not agree to go.

Jammeh's decision to quit came after talks with the presidents of Guinea, Alpha Conde and Mauritania, Mohamed Aziz.

"I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation with infinite gratitude to all Gambians," he said.

"I promise before Allah and the entire nation that all the issues we currently face will be resolved peacefully."
