Academic Staff at the University of Ibadan on Monday defied Federal Government’s directive to resume or get fired by not opening any resumption register.

Although some of the academic staffs were seen in their offices doing research work, most of them said they were not going to sign any register.

The authorities at the University of Ibadan had in a release asked students to return to campuses on January 4, 2014.

The University of Ibadan branch of ASUU had in a message sent to its members enjoined them to stay calm and remain resolute noting that there is nothing wrong in asking government to do what it says it will do immediately.

"ASUU is not making any new demands. Government is only repeating a 'one act play' scripted by the IBB dictatorship in early 90s.It didn't work then, and,it won't work now. " We cannot be intimidated!! Do not sign any register. United We Bargain Divided We Beg!!!Aluta Continua," the statement read.

Going round the faculties of Social Sciences, Education, Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences, there was an indication that the lecturers have resolved not to sign any register, as no resumption register was opened.

Speaking on the strike, National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr Ademola Aremu said academic staff were not labourers and as such could be humiliated by government.

He said there was nothing yet to show for the five month old strike, if the union returns back to the classroom without documenting and getting the funds it asked for public universities from the federal government.

Aremu who noted that the strike was still fully on course nationwide stated that Information Minister, Labaran Maku lied that government had released N45billion to schools as Earned Allowances. He said that the federal government should document its claim that it had deposited N200billion in Central Bank of Nigeria in a letter and communicate with the union rather engaging in media propaganda.

The ASUU national Officer noted that it was a lie that lecturers have started lecturing at FUTA saying the Vice Chancellor reportedly went to class with security around him.

Aremu asked the public to ask if the Vice Chancellor was teaching prior to the strike and asked government to quickly respond to the letter of ASUU and get back to the union so as to restore normalcy to campuses.

"How can you call off a strike when there is nothing to show for it? The federal government is not qualified to call off the strike. Our union is awaiting the government to state all it has done in black and white so that we can be guarded by it and Nigerians can see that we have not gone
on strike in vain. "However, it is a serious insult on us for the federal government to be threatening us with sign or get sacked. "We are not casual workers or labourers. Our research work has been ongoing. Only the teaching was withdrawn during the strike.

"The federal government cannot call off the strike because it did not declare the strike. Our members are awaiting the instruction or directive from the National Executive council of the union. We are no push overs” he added.

Mr. Aremu explained that any academic worth his calling can never be threatened or intimidated as their actions are backed by law.
