Following the order of suspension issued to by the President to Mr David Babachir Lawal, the Secretary of Government of the Federation (SGF) and Ambassador Ayo Oke, the Director General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA), President Muhammadu Buhari has on Wednesday proffered reasons for his actions.

In a press release made available to CEOAfrica and signed by Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, President Buhari stated that the suspension of the top government functionaries was enable a full scale investigation into the allegations of violations of law and due process made against the SGF.
According to the statement, President Buhari has also issued an order of thorough investigation into the large amounts of foreign and local currencies discovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, cash which the NIA has made a claim to.

The statement reads: “the investigation was also ordered to enquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA and to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds.”
The President therefore stated that a three-man committee comprising the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Alhaji Abubakar Malami and the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Babagana Monguno headed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has been instituted to conduct the investigations.
The committee has been directed to submit its report to the President within a period of 14 days.
