Femi Kuti, Afrobeat icon and son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, nearly broke the world record for holding the longest note on a saxophone for 46 minutes 38 seconds.
Although it was announced that Femi Kuti broke the world record, he only broke legendary saxophonist, Kenny G’s record of 45 minutes 37 seconds. In 1997, Kenny G set a Guinness World Record for using circular breathing to sustain an E-Flat on a saxophone.
In February 2000 though, contemporary jazz player, Vann Burchfield set the new world record for holding one note for 47 minutes 5.5 seconds. According to Burchfield, he still holds the record though the category has been cancelled by the Guinness World Record.
