Corp members in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akoko-South–West local Government, Ondo state,Thursday, staged a procession and media campaign tagged ‘FIX OKA ROAD, SAVE LIVES,’ to entreat the Federal government to fix Oka road.

The media campaign which was organised to go viral on both traditional and electronic media is aimed at calling the attention of the Federal Government, relevant authorities and concerned individuals to fix Oka road and Ipele road in order to assure the safety of the road users.

According to the spokesperson and the Corpers’ Liaison Inspector (CLI) of the group of Corp Members, Oladipupo Toyin Mafe said it is expedient that Oke-Oka road be fixed, because it is the only motorable road that links Ondo and some South-West states to the East and the North, particularly the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Mafe, on behalf of his colleagues entreated the Federal Government to repair the dilapidating Oka road and also fix all alternate routes, especially Ipele road.

This according to him, will mitigate the rate of road accidents and vehicle breakdown along that road.

The peaceful procession was organised as part of their contribution to the development of the host community, Akoko-South West Local government.

Ifeoluwa Akinola, one of the Corp members that spoke with the press, noted that to mitigate the rate of havoc that heavy duty vehicle cause on the road, Ipele road should be fixed.

“Every time we ply the road for our monthly Payment Verification exercise at the local government, we are faced with the horror of the sight of burnt cars, upturned heavy duty trucks and the stench of burnt flesh. We therefore appeal to all relevant authorities to fix Oka road and save lives,” Akinola implored.

“Everytime I pass here I always witness fresh accidents, this is why we are raising our voice to remind the government to get this place fixed. Although no corper has died here but we cannot keep relying on our luck,” corp member Lukman Yususf stated.

Another Corper, Uche Ogbonna noted that, “this campaign is a part of our responsibility to provide solution to the needs of our host community, hence we are using out to a larger audience to see that we draw the attention of government to the needs of this people which is the deathly state of  Oke-Oka road.”

Jamiu Yahyah a road user and a heavy duty truck driver also noted that, “the road is too hilly for our trucks to descent or ascend it that is why there are lots of abandoned trucks here.

“We do not have a better road to ply and this is the reason we have no choice than to pass here.

“However we plead to the government to provide a more suitable and alternate road and they should fix the bad parts of the road so that our lives can be safe.”

A resident of the community, Mr Alpha Michael who spoke with press men said the major problem they have in their community is the road and the rate of death that is recorded there. We are appealing to the government to give the road the attention it needs so that safety and peace can be assured in the community.

Another resident, Mr.Ademide Ayomi implored the Federal Government to please listen to their plight so that they can also be happy in that community.
