MIDDLE-EAST ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITIES PARTNER TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The members of the Ethiopian communities have formed a union to combat the abuse and suffering of Ethiopian migrant workers in the region.

The representative of the Ethiopian communities in Jedda, Riyadh, Bahrain, Dubai, Yemen, Lebanon and Qatar signed the memorandum of understanding concerning this, after a meeting in Addis Ababa on Monday, 29 July.

The union in the memorandum of understanding vowed to defend the rights of Ethiopian migrant workers in all their countries, as well as fight against illegal traffickers, in collaboration with relevant government offices.

CEOAFRICA News correspondence gathered that the number of Ethiopian workers being smuggled into various Middle East countries is on the rise.

Ato Rezene Lemelem, Head of the Ethiopian Community Association in Jeddah stated that the number of illegal traffickers is worsening by the day.

Speaking on the same note too, Deputy Head of the Ethiopian Community in Yemen, Ato Nebeyou Belete, noted that there were significant numbers of Ethiopians wandering in different cities of Yeme after being smuggled into the country.
