How we lost our wedding rings to robbers - Lecturer

A lecturer at the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Adeniran Abiodun returned home from work and walked into the hands of the "unwanted" visitors who after, they went away with his most valuable wedding ring and that of his wife. The academia while narrating his ordeals in the hands of three suspected armed robbers at his residence in Akobo area, said it was his first experience meeting men of the underworld face to face.

According to him, he had returned from work into the sitting room not knowing that the armed robbers had been keeping vigil inside the uncompleted building behind his residence. His mother in-law had went out to pick some clothes outside when she discovered that they had fell to the other side of the fence. She was trying to look beyond the fence, when suddenly three hefty men jumped the fence from their hideout and ordered that the old woman should lead them into the main building.

"When they entered, they demanded for everything including money, handsets and other valuables in the house among is our wedding rings.”They also demanded for the key of my car which was parked in the premises and they went away," the lecturer recalled. Before the robbers left, he said he and his wife were locked up in the bathroom while they gave the key to his mother in-law. Immediately they left, he said people came to sympathisers with us, and the incident was reported at the police station.

The robbery victim said the police swung into action, radio messages were sent to all police formation and this led to the arrest of the three robbers. While drumming support for the police, the victim who commended them for a job well down, urged government to the Nigeria Police the necessary support to do more.

Speaking on the incident, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Indawaba, disclosed that on January 15 at about 9.30 pm, Engineer Adeniran Ademola of Elewuro area of Akobo reported at the Akobo Police Station that his Honda Accord car with registration number TD 206 AAA was robbed along other belongings in his house. He said the police started a manhunt for the suspected armed robbers, saying that on January 16, the Command played host to a great and popular hunter known as Alhaji Ali Kwara Azare who was a renowned volunteer crime-fighter. He joined the Command in the search for the lost vehicle.

According to him, in January 17 at about 12.30 am following information, the vehicle was trailed towards Ibadan-Oyo road. "When the three occupants of the vehicle discovered they were being trailed, they diverted to Alaaka road where they opened fire on the police team. "In the ensuing gunfire, the three suspected armed robbers were fatally wounded and the vehicle was recovered," he said.

He added that found in the vehicle were vehicle documents and other documents which suggested that the vehicle belongs to Engineer Adeniran Ademola of Elewuro. Also recovered from them were one AK47 rifle, one double barrel locally made pistol, one single barrel locally made cut-to-size shot-gun, 101 rounds of live ammunition, 9 rounds of live cartridges, 8 assorted mobile phones, one palmtop and the sum of N17,170.00. The victim who identified the suspects, commended the police for bringing to justice.
