Troops have arrested a suspected militia member allegedly linked to the recent attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The suspect, identified as Paul Kolsen, was reportedly apprehended at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Farm Centre, where he was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound believed to have been sustained during the July 2 attack on the institute.

According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the arrest followed credible intelligence and came days after several other suspects connected to the incident were taken into custody.

The July 2 assault was the latest in a string of attacks targeting the institution. During the operation, troops engaged suspected Berom militia members in a fierce gun battle, killing one of the attackers while others escaped into nearby rocky terrain.

Security sources disclosed that soldiers recovered a service rifle bearing registration number “CO-3175” during the encounter. Investigations later revealed that the weapon had been stolen from a soldier who was killed during an attack on troops at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11.

The recovery of the rifle has intensified ongoing investigations, with security agencies now examining possible links between the attacks on NIPSS and previous assaults on military personnel operating along the Kuru–Vom corridor.

Kolsen remains in military custody as investigators work to determine the extent of his alleged involvement in the attack and identify other members of the network believed to be behind the repeated assaults.

Security agencies said intelligence-led operations are continuing across the area to track down additional suspects and dismantle the group allegedly responsible for the attacks.

NIPSS, one of Nigeria’s leading policy and leadership institutions, has suffered three separate attacks by gunmen between June 16 and July 2. The incidents have resulted in the deaths of about three security operatives and one suspected militia member, raising concerns over security in the area.
