NIGERIA (Kaduna)- Governor Ramala Yero has approved the release of 56 inmates from the Zaria Prison.

This was said by the Comptroller of Prisons in Kaduna State, on Friday, shortly after the release of the inmates; a move which he described as a measure to decongest prisons across the state.

“When I assumed duty as comptroller I told the state Governor that our prisons are truly congested and by the power bestowed on him he should look into the problem.

“I thank God, the governor accepted the initiative and constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the state Attorney-General, Justice Shehu Garba,” he said.

Also in an interview, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said the committee would visit all the 14 prisons in the state to carry out similar exercise.

“Going by the exercise carried out in Zaria, it implies that all cases against the 56 inmates were terminated,” he said.

The Commissioner appealed to the released inmates to repent and reform in order to be of good behaviour and useful to the society.
