Chaos erupted on Monday in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra state, following a demonstration in the streets of Onitsha, against last weekend’s killing of a conductor attached to Ifeanyichukwu Motors Limited, a member of the association, along Benue/Nasarawa highway by suspected armed robbers in army uniform.

At a stage, the protesters increased in number that residents of Onitsha and its environs became apprehensive that hoodlums and non-members of the association could infiltrate into the exercise for the purpose of looting and causing mayhem in the city.

However, while the exercise lasted, security personnel mounted surveillance and monitored the exercise closely, until the protesters comprising bus owners, drivers and conductors of luxury buses numbering about 100, who armed themselves with leaves and placards with various inscriptions ended peacefully and dispersed.

The inscriptions on their placards demanded thus: “Federal Government should provide security for us on the highways; Our businesses are about to close due to increase in attacks; Stop the killings of our drivers, conductors and passengers on the highways,” among others.
