A spokesperson for the Presidency has affirmed that one of former president Jacob Zuma's sons has passed on.

Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma, who was the youngest son of Zuma and his late wife Kate Mantsho, died on Sunday night after a short illness.

Vukile Mathabela, who is the media liaison at the Presidency, told News24 that details of Vusi's death would be released later on Monday, once a family spokesperson is appointed.

Condolences have been pouring in. Reverend Jesse Jackson tweeted on Sunday night that he was sending his prayers and condolences to the Zuma family.

The ANC has also since issued a statement expressing its condolences, calling him a "bright and promising young lion and disciplined member" of the party.

It said the young Zuma was a "dedicated and humble activist who took keen interest in the livelihoods of our people".

In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa sent his condolences, saying his thoughts and prayers were with the Zuma family.

"I wish to convey, on behalf of government and all South Africans, our heartfelt condolences to former President Zuma, the Zuma family and relatives on the passing of their beloved son. Words cannot adequately express the pain of losing such a young family member," said Ramaphosa.

The Economic Freedom Fighters also issued a statement Monday, sending the party’s condolences to former President Zuma and his family.

“When death visits, it is never pleasant for anyone, especially the loss of a young person who had his future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zuma family,” said EFF spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
