From Lilongwe in Malawi, CEOAFRICA.com gathered that a Maula Prison Wardress is standing trial of aiding the escape of a prisoner.

Dorothy Khalika was alleged to have helped Uwimane Delifina, a Burundi national, to flee after receiving undisclosed amount of money on 15 March, 2013.

During the hearing at a Lilongwe Magistrate court, three witnesses testified they saw Khalika with the escaped convict on the day she was last seen in prison.

Jennifer Kambalame, who was one of the witnesses paraded, testified that prior to the escape, Delifina had confided in her that she was making a very good deal with Khalika. Jeniffer is an inmate at the prison.

However, she refused to disclose the specifics of their deal, but when she went missing; fellow inmates concluded that the escape was the deal.

Speaking further, Jennifer added,” On the day she left, I saw Madam Khalika opening cell number one which Delifina used to occupy before she escaped, she left it open. Later, I saw Delifina getting out of the cell while madam engaged another wardress on duty in a conversation as Delifina was walking stealthy behind her back.”

She also said after the prisoner had escaped, Khalika walked very quickly in the direction Delifina took.

CEOAFRICA.com also gathered that another inmate and witness in the case Mwalemba Malonda testified he saw both Khalika and Delifina together during an odd hour and asked how come Delifina was out at that time when her inmates were inside.

“I have stayed at the prison for a very long time and for that reason I was given responsibility to look after fellow prisoners. It was on 15 March at around 6 pm when I saw madam Khalika with Delifina walking towards the goat barn, later Delifina was apeaking on the phone before she disappeared into the goat barn,” he concluded.

Sources disclosed that Delifina had just completed nine months of her 10 year sentence for murder of her businessman husband with the intention to inherit his property.
