Two people were killed by boko haram jihadists in a village near the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped four years ago, residents said Monday.

They said gunmen loyal to longtime Boko Haram faction leader Abubakar Shekau invaded the village of Sulima Kalama late Sunday and shot dead two people before setting homes on fire.

“They burnt four houses and looted a drug store before leaving the village,” Ayuba Alamson, a community leader in Chibok, said.

Many fled to nearby villages and Chibok, 25 kilometres (12 miles) away Samson Damina a resident said.

He said the jihadists came from the group’s Sambisa forest stronghold.

Insurgents have repeatedly attacked Chibok and nearby villages since the April 2014 abduction of the schoolgirls,

The Islamists attacked Mifah village, seven kilometres from Chibok, killing two residents and burning the entire village after looting food and livestock in October.

The nine-year Boko Haram insurgency has killed 27,000 people and displaced two million more, creating a dire humanitarian crisis.

The conflict has spilled over into Nigeria’s northern neighbours Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
