The English Premier League (EPL) is arguably the most watched football league in the world – definitely the most lucrative. With millions of passionate fans spread across the globe and sponsorship deals that are bigger than some country’s budget.
It is therefore not surprising to hear the best football players and coaches nurse the ambition of plying their trade in the EPL someday, if they are not already there.
The EPL is the most competitive football league in Europe top 5 leagues. The German Bundesliga has been dominated by Bayern Munich in recent years; Juventus have literally made the Serie A title theirs to lose even before the kick of the ball, while PSG remains kings in the French League. The Spanish La liga boosts a fair level of competition with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid having been crowned champions in recent seasons.
None however comes close to the EPL in terms of its competitiveness and unpredictability. Four different teams – Manchester City, Chelsea F.C, Leicester City and Manchester United have all been crowned champions in the last 6 years.
As we approach the middle of the campaign, it is still delicately poised as any of the top 5 teams still have a shot at the title. While Liverpool leads the way with six points, which could change considerably in the next couple of weeks, if in doubt ask Manchester city. City have led the way for most of the campaign, as at the beginning of November, they looked untouchable but a poor run of matches have left them trailing the league leaders by seven points after boxing day round of fixtures.
Tottenham who have been lurking in the shadows for much of the campaign have emerged as credible challengers for the title. Would this finally be the year the lay their hands on the title after coming agonisingly close on two occasions recently or would Liverpool bring to an end their long wait for a title triumph having not won since 1990? . Will the Champions rally and retain the title or will Chelsea come on strong against all odds?
We might have to wait till May, as a lot of twists and turns still lie ahead. It is the EPL it is as enthralling as it is unpredictable.
