NIGERIA HOSTS THE AFRICA REGIONAL GIRLS GUIDES ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

Girl Scout and Girl Guide Organizations from 31 countries will meet in Nigeria from 11 to 17 August, 2013, for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) 10th Africa Regional Conference. The 96 conference delegates will in theme of the conference titled “African Young Woman: Soaring Towards Excellence,” would work out strategies of growing Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting in regions of over 860,000 girls and young women. The delegates will discuss topics important to the global movement and to girls in their own countries, including eliminating violence against girls and women, global leadership, girls’ education, fund raising and membership growth. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the Chair of the African Union Commission and the keynote speaker in the conference will be presented with ‘Women of Outstanding Achievement Award’ by The World Association, in recognition of her work as a visionary leader both in Africa and on the international stage. As Chair of the African Union Dr. Nkosazana is said to be committed to the full implementation of programmes aimed at the emancipation of women after the AU declared 2010-2020 as the Decade of Women; ensuring health, education and skills development of children and youth in Africa; ensuring Africa’s advocacy for a global deal on climate change, and redoubling efforts towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals ahead of the 2015 deadline. The week-long conference includes workshops, consultations, showcasing of projects by member organizations, the election of the Africa Committee members and the bid for the venue of the next conference. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is said to be the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world. It has member organizations in 145 countries, with 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world. However, the Africa Region will also welcome the newly formed South Sudan Member Organization at the conference
