Moved by the disquiet over the emergence of candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming local government election in Katsina State, a group, Concerned PDP Members’ Forum in the state, has warned that it will not be sidelined in choosing the 2015 governorship candidate of the party.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Katsina, the Chairman of the forum, Alhaji Aliyu Sani, vowed that the group would redouble its efforts to prevent the imposition of an unpopular candidate of any moneybags in the party.

His words: “We have resolved to meet the governor to allow some sanity to prevail whenever there is anything like election, nomination or whatever it is. People should be involved and stakeholders should be consulted.

“We don’t want a situation where three people sit and decide the fate of over six million people. We don’t consider that democratic. That is why we have resolved to see the governor or at least, advise him to always consult and consult widely so that there won’t be grumblings here and there.

“This party, PDP, is our party; we formed it from the scratch, from 1998 to date. We have no other party than PDP. So, we would not want to see PDP losing any election. We have to come in when we see anything going wrong and advise the governor, the party or whoever, to consider wider consultations.”

On the recent emergence of the party’s candidates for the September local government polls in the state, Sani said: “We heard over the radio that 34 candidates will be given flags. They were selected at the Government House by very few people.”

He alleged that the forum and other stakeholders were sidelined, adding that the current push was to make his group more vibrant in the polity.

His words: “If we are sidelined, we will look for someone very competent and challenge their candidate. We are under a democratic setting, mind you. I told you, we cannot allow moneybags to come and take responsibility for what they have no hand in.”
