UI 71st Convocation: 241 bags First Class Honours among 7,430 graduands

The University of Ibadan has graduated 7,430 students of the 2017/2018 academic sessions as 241 students awarded with First Class Honours.  

The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka while presenting his graduation address on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre during the 71st Foundation Day and Convocation ceremonies of the institution said that the Faculty of Science had the highest number of first class at 46, followed by the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry with 38 and Faculty of Technology, 27.

Professor Olayinka said, “It is very exciting to note that 241 of our students are graduating with First Class Honours, Second Class Upper (Division) 1,966, Second Class Lower (Division) 4,206, Third Class 625, Pass 82 and 310 unclassified”.   

“It is only fit and proper to make a special recognition to one of our students who finished with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 7.0. She is Ofure Mary Ebhomielen of the Department of Computer Science” he said.

The VC stated that in its World University Ranking 2020, the University of Ibadan ranked in 501-600 categories by the Times Higher Education, adding that the development was an improvement on the university’s previous ranking.

He said the feat was achieved through the determination and hard work by various faculties, staff and the support of the Senate and Governing Council of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor however urged the graduands to be a good ambassadors of the University of Ibadan wherever they find themselves as they are released to the world to practice what they have been taught in the school to earn a better future for themselves.

Meanwhile, Dr. Olumide Adedeji, a Chartered Accountant and Consultant with two foreign financial services, Deloitte and Standard Chartered Bank who spoke on the topic ‘Light at the End of the Tunnel” called on the graduates to always think ahead so as to fulfill the vision of the University aimed at solving societal problems.

He urged the grandauds to all go out to achieve their dreams by upgrading their skills while they start lay the foundation now.

“Research the skills for your dream job and start to lay the foundation now. Use your NYSC period to prepare to get a good job or create one.

“Nothing can stop a man with the right mental attitude,” he said.

Also Mary Ehbomeilen, who obtained a perfect CGPA, advised her colleagues to always channel their energy in the right direction.

“Your present situation is a result of past action, if you want a fulfilling future, you should ensure that your present action will lead you to that which you crave for,” she said.

She further said, “the world owes you nothing, you have to earn it and not just because you graduated with good grades, you think doors may open for you. If you want it, you have to prove your worth and you have to earn it. Class of 2018, Congratulations!”.

The convocation event had in attendance all the principal officers of the University of Ibadan, Deans of Provost of the Postgraduate College, Deans of Faculties and of Students'; Affair, Directors of Institutes, Heads of Departments, Parents, Students, friends and well-wishers.
