Nigerians from all walks of life yesterday described the late Consultant Endocrinologist of First Consultant Medical Centre, Lagos, Dr. Stella Adadevoh as a heroine, model, a pacesetter and a Nigerian worthy of emulation.

Adadevoh, who attended to the late Liberian- American, Patrick Sawyer, the index Ebola case patient in Nigeria, died on August 19.

Speaking on the sideline at the Holy Cross Cathedral, after the requiem mass, applauded her effort and urged Nigerians to emulate her virtues, a former Vice-President,

Dr. Alex Ekwueme said: “She gave her life for Nigeria because if she had not insisted the late Sawyer would have infected many Nigerians in Calabar and other places he was planning to go. “And we should all be very grateful to her and pray that God may receive her soul and grant her eternal rest,” he said.

A member of the Senate, representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also called for the immortalisation of the deceased.

Speaking at her 12th edition of senatorial district town hall meeting in Lagos, Tinubu said: “This is not the first time Dr. Adadevoh has put her life on the line for Nigerians.

There was a report that sometimes somebody has Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and she was the one that detected it.

Again, it was her hospital that detected the Ebola case in Nigeria. We thank God because God chose her for this purpose. And I think we should all pray for the departed soul because if not for Dr. Adadevoh, Ebola spreads so quickly and only God knows what would have happened in Lagos.” Also, the General Overseer of House on the Rock, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, urged the Federal Gov-ernment to use this opportunity to strengthen the healthcare system.

He said: “She was truly the epitome of the Christian in a country where not every doctor practices the Hippocratic Oath; she sacrificed her life for the health and safety of our country.”

Equally, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said everyone had a role to play in curtailing the virus and should be on red alert saying that “the danger is still on.

“From the testimonies of her classmates and from what I have learnt, she was certainly the true meaning of being a doctor,” he said.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, said the late Adadevoh loved her country so much that she laid down her life.
