As the world marks the International Women’s Day, the United Nations (UN) has called for the support of women in creating a more equal society
UN advocates that women and girls be given equal room and privilege to be part of the world’s leadership and its decision-making process.
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres made this call on Monday on his official twitter handle, @antónioguterres to celebrate the international women’s day.
“Even as women have played critical roles during COVID-19, we have seen a roll-back in hard-won advances in women’s rights. It is time to build an equal future. This is job for everyone and for the benefit of everyone,” he said.
According to UN website, this year’s international women’s day is themed: ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.’
This theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Women stand at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis; the crisis has highlighted both the centrality of their contributions and the disproportionate burdens that women carry.
Going down the memory lane, a lot of women have and still making efforts towards an inclusive world, yet no country has achieved gender equality, women and girls are still been marginalized, restricted in different ways and they still experience gender-based violence.
This year’s theme is a call where there is active participation of both gender in decision-making that will lead to a balanced world. This is the reason we need to be actively involved in the fight against gender bias.
Let’s make 2021 count for women and girls everywhere.”
