The strike declared by oil workers unions in Nigeria has halted gas supplies to several West African countries.

The gas is supplied through the West African Gas Pipeline, WAPCO, to Ghana, Togo, Benin.

The tap has been switched off, with Ghana describing the action as bad news.

It is “not good news” and could damage the country’s economy if prolonged, Ghana’s central bank governor Henry Kofi Wampah told a news conference on Wednesday.

A senior official at WAPCO in Ghana confirmed the shutdown of the pipeline.

Ghana’s economy was hurt in 2013 by an energy deficit.
