The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Friday announced the indefinite suspension of the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria. In a statement which was signed in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the President (Media), Segun Adeyemi and was made available to CEOAFRICA, the minister cited the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence. He also disclosed that the Federal Government has directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria. Recall that Micro-blogging site, Twitter on Wednesday deleted Tuesday controversial tweet of Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, threatening genocide against some perceived ‘enemies of his government’. The tweet also triggered reactions from Nigerians on social media who lambasted the President and demanded that the owner of the respected and popular micro-blogging site, Twitter, Jack Dorsey to remove the offensive comment.
