The Women Arise for Change Initiative, Nollywood stars and National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and other stakeholders yesterday distributed 20,000 leaflets in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, towards enlightening eligible voters on why they should register before ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ends.

The electoral umpire had conducted the CVR between August 20 and 25, this year and had extended the Continuous Voter Registration by one week.

The exercise, taking place at the INEC office in each of the 33 local government areas of the state, began on Monday, September 22 and will end on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

The President, Women Arise and Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, led other participants at the public awareness campaign. Those who graced the rally included the Executive Assistant to Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the state, Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, NAWOJ chairperson in the state, Mrs. Adekiitan Adeagbo, and coordinator of Women Arise in the state, Mr. Adewumi Olowoniyi.

Nollywood stars that graced the programme included Messrs. Saidi Balogun, who is the President of the Golden Movies Ambassador; Rasak Olayiwola (Ojopagogo), Babatunde Tokunbo (Dejo Tufulu) and Bamidele Fagboyo (Dele Fagboyo).

They all emphasised the reasons those who have not registered and have attained 18 years and above to  registered.

Okei-Odumakin while speaking commended INEC for extending CVR by one week as requested by people, adding: “Without registration, no one will be allowed to vote.

Registration is essential. The Continuous Voter Registration started on Monday, September 22 and will run through till Sunday, September 28. Each and everyone must register where the person lives.

“On the day of voting, no movement will be allowed, except the person is a member of the monitoring team. So, we must all ensure, especially those who have not registered, to seize this opportunity to register where they reside and where they can vote. The essence of this registration is for us to exercise our civil responsibility.

“Anyone that is from 18 years and above should register. When you register, you can vote.

“Vote is our power, we must use it. We must not sell our conscience for anything. Like we have done today, we must always gather in very peaceful and orderly manner.

All indigenes of this state, you must carry the crusade so that all eligible voters will vote.”

"Our gathering here  to prove a point, which is that we no longer want to agonise. There is no need complaining that government is not good, people are dying, there is terrorism here and there, if we do not take that civic responsibility to register.
