Tuesday, 22nd June 2021:The ECOWAS Court of Justice, Abuja in a landmark ruling Wednesday afternoon stopped the Buhari administration and its agents from intimidating, sanctioning, arresting or prosecuting anyone for using Twitter in Nigeria, pending the final determination of the suit before it.

The court ruling in an exparte motion brought before it by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) against the Nigerian government stated unequivocal that the app, Twitter is a fundamental right and thereby stopped the Muhammadu Buhari government from going ahead with his threat to prosecute anyone using the twitter app after his June 4, 2021 decision to suspend Twitter operations in Nigeria.

“ECOWAS, Court of Justice has ruled against the Federal Government of Nigeria on the suspension of Twitter, saying the app is a fundamental right. The ECOWAS Court also ruled that the Federal Government cannot arrest or prosecute anybody for using Twitter,: CEOAFRICA can report authoritatively.
