Bank workers storm Senator Andy Uba's house in Abuja, ask him to pay up his debt

Senator Ubah, who is representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate, is said to have been indebted to Heritage bank to the tune of N3bn.

Attempts by CEOAFRICA to get the Senator’s side of the story proved abortive as he neither reply the mail to his Gmail account nor reply our text messages when the line was consistently switched off.

The protesting workers, who were seen in a viral video footage, wore the black T-shirts of the bank with some of them carrying placards.

In the video which was made available to CEOAFRICA, a voice could be heard saying that they came to the residence of the Senator to demand the payment of a loan which he allegedly took some years ago.

The man making the video who appears to be one of the protesters said, “Today is Monday June 21, 2021 and we have here staff of Heritage Bank Plc Abuja and we are in front of Senator Ubah’s hose in Abuja.

“Senator Ubah has owed the bank for a couple of years now and we are here for a very peaceful meeting with him to ask him to kindly repay those loans because those are depositors’ funds.

“Those monies if they are not repaid will throw the number of people you see here with their families out of work and we know the situation of things in the economy and if these numbers of people are thrown out of job, we know what it means.

“So, we are here to appeal to him to kindly pay up this money so that this people will not lose their job and of course the bank becomes a going concern.

While the amount which the Senator owes was not stated in the video, CEOAFRICA gathered that the Ubah is indebted to the bank to the tune of N3bn

A top official of Heritage bank told CEOAFRICA that the Senator took the loan of N3bn from the bank few years ago.

The official, who pleaded not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the matter, explained that the bank had been making several efforts to make the Senator pay the loan. However, he said the efforts have not yielded the desired results.

Another top official of the bank told CEOAFRICA that those that carried out the protest at the residence of the Senator are debt recovery agents of the bank.

The Nigerian businessman, entrepreneur and currently the Senator, representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Nigerian senate and CEO of Capital Oil which he founded in 2001.

Ubah’s occupying the senate seat was not without crisis as a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Kubwa, Abuja on Thursday, 11 April 2019, allegedly sacked him from the Senate based on a suit instituted against him by Mr. Obinna. Uzor had asked the Court to nullify the election of Ubah for allegedly submitting a forged National Examination Council Certificate to contest for the 23 February 2019 senatorial election.

The court of Appeal in Abuja, on Thursday 19 March 2020, affirmed the election of Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) as the senator representing Anambra South. But the Supreme Court on May 12, 2020 affirmed the election of Ifeanyi Ubah of Young Progressives Party (YPP) as duly elected to represent Anambra South Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
