FRIDAY- 11th November, 2021: Dr. Oluwagbohunmi Awosoga, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge, Canada has advised students of Chrisland University Ogun State, to grab opportunities of scholarships outside the country to improve their pursuit of education.

Dr. Awosoga who teaches Applied Statistics courses to students in Nursing, Public Health, and Addictions Counselling program at both undergraduate and graduate levels gave the advice yesterday during a question and answer session he had with the students.

While answering questions on how to go about application, he said

“You apply when they advertise, even your Professors can recommend you, I just sent about 5 of my students to apply for a scholarship program, once your lecturers identify you, they will help you to grow and don’t forget that the Undergraduate is different from the graduate scholarship.

“You apply for it if you think you are qualified after reading the requirements and you will get it. You don’t need to know anybody in the institution. Every applicant is put on a level playing field.

“The undergraduate they pay $5000 - $10,000 per semester to support you while the graduate student’s tuition is paid for and you still get stipends.”

Dr. Awosoga who is also a Research Affiliate of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is in Nigeria for the Africa in Diaspora Fellowship program, a program which is aimed at building the co-curriculum development, research and introducing opportunities that are available overseas for the younger generation to key into.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with CEOAFRICA, he disclosed that the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chinedum Peace Babalola worked very hard to facilitate his coming to Nigeria.

“what we are doing actually is for the development of Chrisland University, I am here to contribute to the system, first thing we did since we got here was to meet with Youth Corps members serving here and the Alumni of this institution to discuss opportunities for graduate studies abroad with scholarships.

“As I speak to you, more than 20 of them are in the process of getting these scholarships because there are several scholarships abroad and that will help Chrisland to focus more on preparing excellent students with better grades.

“We have also been able to open a statistical consulting centre in the Basic medical science building where people can come with their data sets and professors and students will be employed there to be able to work with students and professors to be able to do their data analysis and that will go a long way to the development of this institution”

Dr. Awosoga while stressing the need for students to get equipped abroad and come back home to serve also added “the faculty members who do not have their PhD yet and want to go abroad for it, there are several scholarships for this and I believe they will be able to make head way over there, especially with the talents that God has blessed Nigeria with.”

A student, Okeola Inioluwa, who spoke with CEOAFRICA was of the view that the opportunity be made available to other Nigerian students, so as to reduce the rising menace of internet scam amongst Nigerian youths.

He also added that the session spent with the guest Professor has also broadened his thinking and that he hopes to graduate as the best student from the university so as to open doors of scholarship opportunities abroad.
