RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS NEW WATER SCHEME FOR THE ELEME COMMUNITY

Governor Amaechi Rotimi of Rivers State has commissioned a regional water supply scheme for the people of popular Eleme community in the oil rich River State.

This new development which was made available by the Rivers State Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development in partnership with Shell at Alesa is however expected to bring relieve to the people of the community and to host of International Oil Companies (IOC) like Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and other allies.

The people of Eleme local government area until now is said could not have access to safe drinking water because of the “evil deeds” of the international oil companies that polluted the land, streams and rivers with oil and dangerous chemicals.

The new water scheme, according to the disclosure, came as an intervention activated upon after the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) indication that the situation is capable of causing serious health hazards..

Dick Ejire, the chairman of the Water Consumers’ Association (WCA) Eleme branch, expressed his gratitude in the new development, noting that it used to be a long distress trek for the people to fetch water before now.
