If news reaching the desk of CEOAFRICA.com from Liberia is anything to go by, then it can be said that the future of education in the country is in great jeopardy, as it was gathered that nearly 25,000 school-leavers failed the admission examination to the University of Liberia.

The education minister expressed her shock that no single candidate passed the examination.

It was gathered from Momodu Getaweh, the University spokesperson that the students lacked enthusiasm and did not have a basic grasp of English.

“In English, the mechanics of the language, they didn't know anything about it”, he said.

The exam which cost each candidate $25 did not record a single successful person and it means the already overcrowded University will not have fresh candidates when academic year resume in September.

Meanwhile, students have expressed their shock about the outcome of the exam, with many of them disappointed that their dream has been shattered.

However, the Education Minister, Etmonia David-Tarpeh told journalists that she will meet with the University officials regarding the failure rate.

"I know there are a lot of weaknesses in the schools but for a whole group of people to take exams and every single one of them to fail, I have my doubts about that. It's like mass murder."

Although she acknowledged that most schools in Liberia lack basic educational resources, she said going by some of the candidates she knew and the schools they attended, she can say categorically that they have what it takes to pass the exam.

"These are not just schools that will give people grades. I'd really like to see the results of the students," she added.

But, the University spokesman Momodu Getaweh told reporters that the decision of the University would never be changed by emotion.
