The Oyo State Government has warned residents of the state against drinking water from streams.

The state government noted that this advice became necessary because some streams have been contaminated, the residents of Ijaye, Ido, Olowo-Igbo, Iseyin, and Ibarapa were warned against drinking water from contaminated streams in their communities.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Abiodun Oni, made this known on Wednesday.

Oni explained that a truck conveying chemical substances emptied its contents into a drainage and the chemical substances were washed into the streams passing through the five communities.

The Commissioner stated that the said truck was involved in an accident at Iroko-Oyo highway while conveying substances presumed to be soap-making chemicals.

Oni further explained that this has impaired the water quality and rendered it toxic to humans and the environment at large. Farmers who plant their cash crops within the affected areas and fishermen are admonished to suspend every activity within the vicinity.

The Commissioner further stated that the State Government will continue to ensure that the ecosystem is protected in the State and the residents should not cultivate the bad culture of dumping wastes into drainages as they eventually find their way into streams and rivers and eventually end up in the food chain process as such posing threats to all humans.
