J.I MOTOJELU, THE CUSTOM OFFICER'S DEAD BODY
Uproar engulfed the Seme border area of Lagos State on Thursday as the officials of the Nigeria Customs Service unintentionally shot a 35-year-old man.
CEOAFRICA news desk gathered from an eye witness that the victim of the gunshot was hit by a stray bullet while the officials of the Customs were struggling with motorist trying to smuggle a red Volkswagen bus from Benin Republic into Nigeria.
According to report on the incident, some residents of the area took to the street in protest, alleging that the customs officials had killed not less than three motorists this month under the cover that they were smugglers.
Consequently in the upsurge, a Superintendent of Customs named J.I Motojelu, who was driving past the scene, met the angry mob who in the spirit of retaliation beat him to death and also set his vehicle ablaze.
The NCS Public Relations Officer, Seme Command, Ernest Olattah said Motojelu who knew nothing about the incident was on his way to attend a meeting at the command before he ran into the angry mob.
He further stated that the Customs Area Controller of Seme Border, Othman Abdu Saleh, has in collaboration with sister government agencies including the police, commenced moves to bring the perpetrators of the outrageous misdeed to book adding that the comptroller had also posited that the unfortunate incidents as this will not deter operatives of the command under his watch from carrying out their lawful duties.
However, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed that seven suspects had been arrested, stated Joel is recuperating at Badagry General Hospital while the slain customs officer has been deposited at the mortuary.
