Nigerian coach based in Switzerland, Adedeji Adeyemi Anthony has urged Golden Eaglets to go for victory in today’s encounter with Morocco in the ongoing CAF U-17 AFCON in Constantine, Algeria.
Speaking from his base with our correspondent yesterday, Coach Adefemi opines that the Golden Eaglets need to be composed in front of goals and be well coordinated to achieve the desired victory.
“In our match against Zambia especially in the second half we are a little bit jittery and nervous thereby using long balls which did not do the team any good. Against Morocco we should stick with our natural playing pattern by using short passes”
“Our goalkeeper is a ball players and our attack should start from the defence. We have the edge over Morocco and we should be able to control the game from beginning. Morocco is only relying on the speed and power of their striker which we can easily neutralize by playing a compact and well coordinated game. I definitely want to see improvement in our game.” Adefemi said
“The players should not be too anxious to score, one of our greatest undoing against Zambia. With the good mentality goals will come with good composure and the right timing” Adefemi told Blueprint Sport last night
Also speaking on the game, president of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has charged the team to book an early spot in the tournament quarter-finals.
The NFF supremo, on a visit to the team camp in Constantine on Monday night, in company with Member of NFF Board, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, reiterated that the boys need to give their all to defeat group leaders Morocco and climb to the top of the pool ahead of the final Group B matches on Saturday.
“Let me start by congratulating you on your victory over Zambia on Sunday. It was a tough game but your quality showed in your ability to pick the three points. However, nothing has been won yet. You must go all out against Morocco to achieve victory and bounce back to the top of the group.
“It is important to assure of your qualification to the knock-out rounds early so that you avoid all kinds of permutations before the last match of the group phase. Nigerians are watching and supporting you in scores of millions and you cannot afford to disappoint our people.”
As a 12-nation tournament, the first two top-placed teams in each of the three groups will advance to the quarter-finals, alongside the best two third-placed teams. The quarter-final matches will produce the four semi-finalists, who will also automatically qualify as Africa’s representatives at this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup finals.
