DR Congo have knocked Egypt out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, winning 8-7 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.

The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time, which necessitated a shootout to decide which country moved to the quarter-finals.

The Egyptian goalkeeper, Gabaski missed his kick, while the Congolese keeper, Lionel Mpasi-Nzau sent an unstoppable penalty past Gabaski into right side of the goal to give them the victory.

Earlier, DR Congo stormed into the lead in the 37th minute of the game. Meschack Elia got to a rebound inside the six-yard box and produced a header. He managed to put the ball into the middle of the goal to make it 1-0.

One minute into first half added time, Egypt equalised from the penalty spot. Mostafa Mohamed won the battle of wills and sent an unstoppable penalty past Lionel Mpasi-Nzau into the top right corner.

In the 53rd minute, Cedric Bakambu had a good opportunity when he latched on to a cross from the wing, but his strike from the six-yard box was not accurate enough and the ball went a few inches wide of the right post.

During the extra-time, Mohamed Hamdi made a bad challenge and received a second yellow card from Abongile Tom and was sent off.
