The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock Development, in partnership with Real People Concept, successfully hosted the first "Southwest Cattle, Sheep & Goat Farmers Day Out & Exhibition, bringing together key stakeholders in the livestock industry to discuss advancements and celebrate the significant contributions of ruminant farmers to Nigeria's economic development. The event, took place on Thursday December 19th, 2024 at Dr. KJ Nwufor Hall in the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology at MOOR Plantation, focused on the theme "Sustaining Livestock Resilience in Changing Times: Innovation, Collaboration, and Growth for the Ruminant Sector."
The event was graced by prominent figure in the agricultural sector, including Honourable Idris Abiola-Ajimobi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock Development; Mrs. Akeredolu Olayinka, Southwest Regional Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security; and the Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture, represented by Mrs. Olubukola Akinloye. The gathering also welcomed Dr. Adekoya Olatunde Owosibo, Provost of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology. State officials and representatives from relevant agricultural bodies, distinguished guest, esteemed farmers, and industry stakeholders were also present.
Mrs. Ilesanmi Grace, in her opening remarks, emphasized the dual purpose of the event, stating, "We are here to learn on how to improve livestock production and to celebrate the strength, resilience, and immense contributions of our ruminant farmers to the economic development of this nation.
In a compelling welcome address by Honourable Idris Abiola-Ajimobi, he underscored the significance of the event for the livestock sector, calling it a "remarkable milestone and a testament to our collective commitment to driving growth sustainably in this vital industry."
As a seasoned livestock farmer, Abiola-Ajimobi expressed his understanding of the myriad challenges and rewards that come with raising livestock. "I share in your passion, struggles, and determination to make a lasting impact in the ruminant sector," he stated, connecting with attendees on a personal level.
Under the theme "Sustaining Livestock Resilience in Changing Times: Innovation, Collaboration, and Growth for the Ruminant Sector," he stressed that the purpose of the gathering extended beyond mere survival. "What we are doing today isn't just about surviving; it’s about sacrificing our comfort zones to embrace new ideas, innovations, and opportunities for growth," he explained. He encouraged the audience to rise above challenges and leverage the collective wisdom present at the event.
Abiola-Ajimobi further highlighted the unique opportunity presented by the exhibition for farmers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and innovators to share knowledge and discuss practical solutions. "The insights we gain today will not only benefit you as individual farmers but will also contribute to the collective growth of our ruminant sector and the livestock development ministry as a whole”, he stated.

Mr. Tanimowo, a prominent figure in the agricultural sector, emphasized the critical role of livestock farmers in Nigeria's economy. He stated that these farmers are the "lifeblood of agriculture," contributing 30% of agricultural activities and accounting for 3% of the nation's GDP.
Highlighting the state government's proactive approach, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, the Honorable Commissioner for the Ministry of Culture and Rural Development in Oyo State, delivered a compelling speech at the event. He outlined the government's vision to transform and reposition agriculture as the leading industry in driving the state's economy and ensuring food security.
"The Oyo State government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, is dedicated to advancing policies that enhance farming activities," he said. "Our goal is not only to improve food security but also to create a sustainable platform for wealth generation for our people."
In a bid to support local livestock farmers, the Oyo State government has rolled out specific measures aimed at addressing their immediate needs. Palliative aid has been provided to farmers across the state, and an ongoing vaccination program is being implemented to prevent diseases among livestock. These initiatives are designed to strengthen the resilience of farmers and enhance the health and productivity of their animals.
Barrister Olaleye urged farmers to embrace innovative practices, engage in continual learning, and collaborate with research institutions and fellow farmers. "The Oyo State Government remains unwavering in its commitment to supporting sustainable livestock farming," he reaffirmed.
