Following a peaceful protest and resistance to what appears to be intimidation by a detachment of men of the Nigerian army, the Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has met with the leadership of the aggrieved students association.

Recall that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Ondo Axis, had on Thursday mobilised its members on issues bordering on poor welfare, failing learning infrastructure and neglect by the state government, among others.

In a statement released by the Deputy Coordinator of NANS Zone D Southwest, Adegoke Naheem Ademola, following the meeting with the Governor, NANS described the dialogue with the state government as a strategic step towards actualising the students’ demands.

According to Comrade Adejoke, the protest was a product of sustained agitation for better welfare and improved conditions for students across the state.

In the statement, tagged: “Setting The Record Straight: The Nans Protest And The Imperative Of Student Welfare”, NANS clarified misconceptions and misinformation circulated regarding the protest, including claims that the Governor ordered the deployment of the Nigerian Army to the protest ground.

Warning against the spread of unfounded insinuations, NANS explained that the protest was neither sponsored nor politically motivated, adding that it was an independent and genuine demonstration of their firm commitment to the well-being of Nigerian students.

The apex students’ group lauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his swift response in calling for dialogue.

The statement read, “In my capacity as the Deputy Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D (Southwest), I led a peaceful demonstration in conjunction with the leadership of NANS JCC Ondo Axis to express our deep-seated dissatisfaction with the continued neglect of the student community, the alarming surge in insecurity, the deteriorating state of infrastructure on campuses, and the series of unfulfilled promises by the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
