The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has begun preparations for its centenary celebration, marking 100 years of dedicated service to the nation’s health sector since its establishment in 1927. The President of the Society, Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, disclosed this while addressing journalists at a press briefing held recently at the PSN National Secretariat in Lagos.

According to Pharm. Tanko, the 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated in Abuja by March 2027, will not just be a moment of reflection but a defining milestone to showcase the evolution and achievements of the pharmacy profession in Nigeria with participation from national, state, and international partners, including the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).

He emphasized that the centenary will spotlight how pharmacists have shaped the country’s healthcare system, from drug regulation and clinical services to public health and research innovations.

“Our centenary will be a moment to reflect on our journey and project the future of pharmacy, “we call on all pharmacists across the world to join us in celebrating 100 years of professional excellence and service to humanity.”

“It is not merely about marking time; it is about celebrating impact, honouring our past, and preparing for the next century of pharmacy excellence,” he said. “We want to tell the story of how pharmacists have contributed to Nigeria’s health development and inspire the next generation to build on this legacy.”

The PSN President announced that a special Centenary Planning Committee, chaired by past president Pharm. Olumide Akintayo, has been inaugurated to coordinate activities leading up to the grand celebration. The committee is expected to design programs that will capture the Society’s historical journey, document its milestones, and project its future aspirations.

“Pharmacists have been central to Nigeria’s healthcare advancement for nearly a century, from ensuring access to quality medicines to driving innovations in pharmaceutical sciences,” he added. “As we approach 2027, our focus is on strengthening professionalism, equity, and recognition for pharmacists in every area of healthcare delivery.”

The PSN President reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to promoting policies that ensure fair treatment for all healthcare professionals and advancing the pharmacy practice to meet global standards. He stressed that the upcoming 100-year milestone would serve as both a celebration and a call to action toward building a more integrated and responsive health system in Nigeria.

“We are not just looking back with pride; we are looking forward with purpose,” he said. “The PSN at 100 will symbolize renewal — a rebirth of vision, collaboration, and innovation within the pharmacy profession.”
