Mr. Nathaniel Msen Awuapila, immediate past President of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), and his wife, Mrs. Magdalene Ishan’pepe Igbazua, were celebrated in a landmark ceremony on Saturday, 3rd January, 2026 in Vandeikya, Benue State,
The couple was honoured for their decades-long contributions to peacebuilding, humanitarian service, and child protection, with their efforts impacting communities across Nigeria and Africa.
Speaking at the event, Awuapila reflected on the journey that brought him to this point:
“Today’s honour is both humbling and inspiring. It is a recognition not just of my work, but of the countless partners, colleagues, and community members who have stood with me in advancing peace, protecting children, and building resilient institutions. My wife and I see this as a shared achievement, one that strengthens our commitment to continue serving humanity.”
The celebration, held at the District Council Hall in Vandeikya town, was hosted by His Royal Highness Chief Nyiyongo Achiaku, paramount ruler of Vandeikya Local Government Area and Chairman of the Ter Kunav. Chief Achiaku praised Awuapila’s steadfast dedication to peace and humanitarian service, calling him “a son of Tiv whose work has brought honour and hope to our communities and the nation at large.”
In a symbolic gesture, Mrs. Awuapila was adorned in traditional Tiv attire by the monarch, highlighting her crucial support in her husband’s initiatives. Mr. Awuapila himself was presented with ceremonial Tiv regalia, including the Angeer, a traditional bag, and spears, alongside an award inscribed:
“For Outstanding Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Work and Dedication to Serving Humanity.”
The event also acknowledged Awuapila’s resilience following the assassination attempt he survived in April 2025, with the conveners noting that his survival was providential, enabling him to continue his mission for peace.
Under Awuapila’s leadership, SPSP evolved from a largely regional association into a globally recognised peacebuilding institution. Key achievements include:
• Establishing SPSP branches in Sierra Leone and Central Africa, with Mrs. Awuapila playing a pivotal role in securing international partnerships.
• Securing Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC.
• Facilitating Awuapila’s election to the Council of the International Peace Bureau (IPB), the world’s oldest peacebuilding body.
Awuapila’s work extends to addressing farmer–herder conflicts in Benue through the Forum on Farmer and Herder Relations in Nigeria (FFARN), and to supporting child protection via UNICEF’s Child Rights Violation Monitoring project, implemented by NextierSPD. His interventions have strengthened early warning mechanisms, ensured timely reporting of incidents, and contributed to sustainable local protection systems.
Chief Achiaku praised the Awuapilas for their unwavering dedication, stating: “Honouring Mr. and Mrs. Awuapila today is a celebration of service, resilience, and vision. Their work touches lives, strengthens institutions, and inspires our youth to embrace peace as a guiding principle.”
The ceremony reinforced the couple’s enduring legacy as pillars of peace, humanitarianism, and child advocacy, with the community and civil society groups joining in celebrating their contributions.
