Youth members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to stage coordinated protests at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun and Jigawa states today, as part of the #AmupitanMustGo campaign.

The party’s National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, disclosed the plans in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, accompanied by flyers announcing demonstrations in Lagos and Ogun under the theme “Operation Occupy INEC.”

According to Rufai, the Lagos protest is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Yaba College of Technology, while participants in Ogun State are expected to gather by 11:00 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) office in Abeokuta. As of the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether demonstrations have commenced at the INEC office in Lagos.

Rufai noted in an earlier statement that ADC youths had previously staged a protest at the INEC office in Lagos, carrying placards with various inscriptions. He described the demonstrations as peaceful and aimed at demanding accountability.

“The Lagos ADC Youth Wing has taken a firm and peaceful stand to deliver a clear message: the rule of law must be respected, due process must be upheld, and Joash Amupitan must resign immediately, while the Senator David Mark-led leadership should be restored without delay,” he said.

He added that the protest is “a call for accountability, not chaos,” emphasizing the need for institutional fairness and adherence to due process.

The planned demonstrations follow a similar protest held in Abuja on April 8, which drew participation from prominent opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye.

The protests come in response to INEC’s decision on April 1 to de-recognise certain factions within the ADC, citing a March 12 ruling by the Court of Appeal which directed parties to maintain the status quo in the ongoing leadership dispute.

ADC supporters have since accused the electoral body of partisanship and are calling for the removal of its chairman, Joash Amupitan.
