The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, access to medical treatment while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The approval was granted on Wednesday by Justice Rilwan Aikawa following an application by the defence during proceedings in the ongoing trial involving alleged money laundering and corruption-related offences.
El-Rufai and his co-defendant, Joel Adoga, are standing trial on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
According to a statement issued by ICPC spokesperson, John Odey, the proceedings focused on an application by El-Rufai seeking a variation of the bail conditions earlier imposed by the court.
During the hearing, defence counsel appealed to the court to permit the former governor to receive medical attention, specifically dental and eye care, at designated medical facilities in Abuja.
The defence requested approval for treatment at Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital.
In his ruling, Justice Aikawa directed the ICPC to escort El-Rufai to the medical facilities under strict supervision whenever treatment becomes necessary and to return him to custody immediately afterward.
The court further emphasised that all movements connected to the medical visits must remain under the commission’s supervision.
Odey stated that the commission would comply fully with the court’s directive while maintaining lawful custody of the defendant pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
Earlier, the court admitted El-Rufai to bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum, while the administrative bail earlier granted to the second defendant was adopted by the court.
The matter was adjourned to May 7, 2026, for ruling on the application seeking variation of the bail conditions.
