The United States government has announced plans to intensify enforcement measures against parents who owe more than $2,500 in unpaid child support, including the revocation of U.S. passports.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the U.S. Department of State said the initiative is being implemented by the administration of President Donald Trump in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to the department, the move is aimed at ensuring that parents who fail to meet their financial obligations to their children face “real consequences.”

“U.S. law requires Americans to comply with child support obligations in order to receive a U.S. passport and allows the Department of State to revoke the passport of an individual who owes more than $2,500 in child support,” the statement said.

The State Department noted that it is expanding coordination with HHS “on an unprecedented scale” to identify individuals with substantial outstanding child support debts and enforce penalties against them.

Officials warned that affected individuals could lose the ability to use their passports for international travel once revocation takes effect.

“Once a passport is revoked, it may no longer be used for travel,” the department stated, urging Americans with significant child support arrears to settle their debts promptly to avoid sanctions.

The department added that passport eligibility can only be restored after outstanding obligations are resolved with the relevant state child support enforcement agency and the individual is removed from the HHS list of delinquent parents.

“The State Department is putting American families first through our passport process,” the statement added.
