The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government said June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of citizens whose efforts contributed to the establishment of democratic governance in the country.
The statement added that the legacy of these heroes continues to guide the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.
The Minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
