The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Josiah Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the commission will remain neutral and impartial in the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Tuesday, August 18, at the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 presidential election, dismissing concerns that the electoral body could favour a particular candidate or political party.

According to the INEC Chairman, the commission has no interest in determining who wins or loses the election.

“INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. The commission does not have a candidate, nor does it favour any political platform,” Amupitan said.

He urged political parties and their candidates to ensure that the 2027 campaign is focused on ideas and solutions rather than violence and personal attacks.

“Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war,” he said.

The law professor added that Nigerians were more interested in practical solutions to the challenges facing the country than insults and political rhetoric.

“Nigerians do not want insults; they want solutions. They deserve to hear clear, concrete, and measurable manifestos,” Amupitan said.

He also assured Nigerians that INEC would build on its previous achievements to deliver a credible and transparent election in 2027.

Amupitan disclosed that preparations for the elections were progressing, with the commission scaling up its logistics to accommodate a nationwide ad hoc workforce of about 1.4 million personnel across more than 176,000 polling units.

“I am pleased to report that our preparations for the 2027 elections are progressing with absolute precision. We are scaling our operational logistics to manage a massive nationwide ad hoc workforce of 1.4 million personnel across over 176,000 polling units,” he said.

The INEC Chairman called on political actors to uphold the peace and integrity of the electoral process, stressing the need for all stakeholders to place the interests of Nigeria above partisan considerations.
