President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate arrest of George Buchi Nwabueze and the suspension of three permanent secretaries following the discovery of another alleged fake agency operating within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Aliyu, SAN, disclosed this on Friday after briefing President Tinubu on the commission’s ongoing investigation into alleged fictitious government agencies and procedural lapses in the public service.
According to Aliyu, the commission uncovered an office operating under the name **National Brands Development and Made-in-Nigeria Special Project Office**, which had allegedly been allocated office space within the OSGF premises without presidential approval and in violation of existing regulations.
He said the discovery was made during the ICPC’s broader investigation into the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIFC), following a directive by the President.
Aliyu identified Nwabueze as the promoter of the disputed office and said investigations showed that he operated under several variations of his name, including George Nathan, George Nathan Nwabueze, Honourable George Buchi Nwabueze, Prince George Buchi Nwabueze and George Nwabueze.
The ICPC chairman also disclosed that the commission had identified suspected collaborators within the OSGF and had engaged the office to obtain relevant information concerning the alleged fake agency.
Following the briefing, Aliyu said President Tinubu directed the immediate arrest of Nwabueze and ordered the suspension of three permanent secretaries — M.S. Danjuma, Engineer Nadungu Gagare and Richard P. Pheelangwah.
He said the commission would continue its investigation into the matter and take further action based on its findings.
The latest discovery brings to four the number of alleged unlawful agencies uncovered in the course of the ICPC’s investigation following the controversy surrounding the purported PFIFC.
The PFIFC came under scrutiny after its self-styled Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, was linked to the disputed body and subsequently became the subject of investigation.
In an interim report submitted to President Tinubu on August 6 after a 30-day investigation, the ICPC had also uncovered two other alleged fictitious bodies — the FCT Investment Promotion Agency and the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency and Public-Private Partnership.
The controversy has also triggered a separate investigation by the House of Representatives, which is probing the alleged PFIFC and its disputed director-general.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Accountant-General of the Federation have appeared before the House committee investigating the matter.
