Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died.
Hassan’s daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced his death on Sunday evening during a live session on Instagram. Reports from Nigerian media outlets confirmed the development.
His death came days after his family disclosed that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance.
The family had earlier said it was seeking specialised medical care for the veteran actor, with colleagues and well-wishers rallying around him as efforts were made to secure appropriate treatment.
Hassan, who was 66 according to multiple reports, was one of the most prominent figures in the Yoruba-language film industry. He built a career spanning several decades as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter, earning widespread recognition for his distinctive performances.
He began his acting career in 1981 and later left his job with the Water Corporation in 1994 to pursue acting full-time. He subsequently featured in numerous Yoruba and English-language productions, including Aníkúlápó, Danfo Driver, Amerah, Bank Alert, IGE and Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre.
Before his death, several prominent actors and stakeholders in the entertainment industry had joined calls for medical assistance for the veteran actor.
Among those who rallied support were TAMPAN President Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin, alongside actors including Femi Adebayo, Muyiwa Ademola, Bimbo Oshin, Odunlade Adekola, Mide Martins and Ibrahim Yekini.
The family had clarified that its appeal was primarily for medical expertise and access to appropriate treatment rather than financial assistance.
Further details about the circumstances surrounding his death and funeral arrangements are expected from his family and colleagues.
